9:09pm: ‘ABSOLUTE CARNAGE’: ANOTHER DOCKER DOWN

Fremantle has lost another player to what looks like a serious injury as Brisbane mounts a comeback in Perth.

Brennan Cox grabbed his hamstring after stretching for a mark and lay on the ground for several minutes before being helped from the field by trainers.

“This is just so brutal,” Will schofield said on Fox Footy, while Dockers legend Matthew Pavlich described the scenes as “absolute carnage”.

In some more positive news, Karl Worner has returned to the interchange bench after signigicant time in the Fremantle rooms following a sickening head knock.

The defender is out of the game but received an ovation from Dockers fans as he walked around the boundary line.

Oscar McDonald is also done for the day after hyper-extending his left knee.

The Dockers are now two men down on the bench after activating sub Neil Erasmus.

Brisbane has closed the gap to 16 points with 15 minutes left on the clock.

The Lions have also activated their sub, with Kai Lohmann replacing Connor McKenna (hamstring tightness).

9:00pm: THREE-QUARTER TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Play has stopped for several minutes after Fremantle defender Karl Worner was KO’d in what appeared to be a clash of heads with Lion Lincoln McCarthy.

Minutes later Oscar McDonald grabbed his knee after landing awkwardly following a spoil. He has been helped from the field by trainers.

8:30pm: SUPERCOACH STARS

Luke Ryan and Caleb Serong have both cracked the SuperCoach ton early in the third quarter. Serong has an immense 29 disposals, four tackles and seven clearances.

8:01pm: HALFTIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

After Brisbane got the jump early the second quarter was all Fremantle, with the Dockers kicking the last six goals of the match including a post-siren shot from Jye Amiss after he took a screamer with seconds left in the second quarter.

Freo is also dominating in SuperCoach.

54 – Luke Jackson

53 – Brandon Starcevich

7:40pm: ACTION JACKSON

Luke Jackson had a reasonably subdued start but he has wrestled the game back in Fremantle’s favour in a huge second quarter.

Filling in for injured ruckman Sean Darcy, Jackson has got busy around the ground with a couple of huge marks and drifted forward to kick a goal.

In the blink of an eye he has jumped from 18 to 40 SuperCoach points, and the Dockers are back within a goal.

Caleb Serong is having a day out. He has 21 disposals, nine more than anyone else on the ground, and 74 SuperCoach points.

6:58pm: HAYDEN YOUNG BRAIN FADE

The Lions have kicked three goals to nothing in the opening five minutes in Perth, with the third a gift to Dayne Zorko courtesy of a 50m penalty.

Zorko marked the ball in the centre square only for Hayden Young to waltz right past clearly in the protected area. The penalty took Zorko to within easy goalscoring range and he made no mistake.

It’s not the start Young’s 69,000 SuperCoach owners were after, with a 50m penalty against worth -8 points.

6:50pm: HOW DID HARLEY REID HANDLE THE HEAT?

The most talked about teenager in the country has made a strong start to his AFL career.

No.1 draft pick Harley Reid exploded out of the blocks with eight disposals in the first quarter against Port Adelaide.

He finished with 16 plus two marks, nine contested possessions, five clearances, four inside-50s and 78 SuperCoach points.

Aftter wnning a hard ball in the defensive 50 in the third term he crashed into Todd Marshall, drawing the ire of Charlie Dixon who put Reid on his backside.

There are no late changes for the final match of round 1.

Fremantle's sub is Neil Erasmus.

6:10pm: THREE-QUARTER TIME LEADERS

Dan Houston is the top scorer on the ground, great news for his 18,000 owners in SuperCoach.

95 – Dan Houston

91 – Zak Butters, Charlie Dixon, Jeremy McGovern

89 – Todd Marshall

88 – Ivan Soldo

86 – Connor Rozee

While Harley Reid does his best to lift the Eagles in hgis first AFL game, two-time All-Australian Andrew Gaff is nowhere to be seen.

The 275-game veteran has three disposals for the match, of which two hit the target.

All his possessions were uncontested and he has recorded 15 metres gained.

Halfway through the third term Gaff is sitting on 11 SuperCoach points.

Update: Gaff has been subbed out. Campbell Chesser has been injected into the game.

5:15pm: HALFTIME LEADERS

Charlie Dixon leads the way while Ivan Soldo shows West Coast will be a very friendly match-up for rucks again in 2024.

73 – Charlie Dixon

72 – Ivan Soldo

67 – Bailey Williams

65 – Kane Farrell

64 – Dan Houston

5:00pm: THAT WAS OUT OF BOUNDS!

As Port Adelaide kicks away in the second term we can take a closer look at a slightly bizarre West Coast goal just before quarter-time.

Did Jake Waterman keep this ball in play?

4:50pm: CHARLIE RUNNING HOT

Charlie Dixon has kicked 3.2 and is threatening to tear the game apart.

He has a game-high 66 SuperCoach points seven minutes into the second quarter.

Great result for the 543 coaches (0.1 per cent) who picked him in their teams!

4:40pm: QUARTER-TIME LEADERS

West Coast has brought the fight to Port Adelaide with No.1 draft pick Harley Reid on fire early with eight disposals and two clearances in the first quarter.

46 – Charlie Dixon

39 – Bailey Williams

37 – Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Dan Houston

33 – Zak Butters, Travis Boak

32 – Jake Waterman

31 – Tim Kelly

4:36pm: BUTTERS GOES BANG

Jeremy McGovern is in the hands of the trainers after being ironed out by a savage Zak Butters bump on the stroke of quarter-time.

McGovern turned his body as he collected the footy and copped the full force of Butters in his ribs.

That hurt, but Butters shouldn’t have anything to worry about from the match review officer.

4:25pm: BUTTERS ON THE BOARD

After a surprisngly close-fought opening 15 minutes Zak Butters has broken through with a classy goal from a forward-50 stoppage.

Butters starts the season in 20 per cent of SuperCoach teams.

4:02pm: GAME ON IN ADELAIDE

We’re away at Adelaide Oval for Port Adelaide v West Coast – and Zak Butters and Harley Reid are standing next to each other for the first bounce. Pass the popcorn!

4:00pm: OLIVER SPEAKS ABOUT OFF-FIELD DRAMA

Clayton Oliver has spoken of his difficult pre-season after racking up 35 disposals in Melbourne’s win over the Bulldogs.

“It’s been a tough couple of months, but Gawny and the rest of the boys helped me out,” he said on Fox Footy.

Oliver left Melbourne’s pre-season camp in January due to personal issues, while he was hospitalised in December following a medical episode. He took several weeks away from the club before returning on the eve of the season.

Asked if he had repaid the faith of the club with his performance, Oliver said: “Absolutely not. I’ve still got a lot of work to do, little steps along the way.”

He said he was still working on being “a better person, a better teammate”.

“I feel all right, ticking along and hopefully get better every week.”

Oliver received a standing ovation from Demon fans when he went to the bench late in the game.

“It was a little bit emotional, actually,” he said. “We love the Melbourne faithful.”

Melbourne has squared its ledger 1-1 with a 45-point win over the Western Bulldogs.

The Dogs started brightly with the first two goals of the game but could manage only seven more while the Demons added 16 majors.

Max Gawn was absolutely massive.

162 – Max Gawn

126 – Marcus Bontempelli

119 – Christian Petracca, Tim English

118 – Jack Billings

105 – Steven May, Clayton Oliver, Lachie Bramble

3:38pm: JACK IN THE BOX

It wasn’t the ideal start to Jack Billings’ career as a Demon when he started as the sub in opening round.

But he started in the 22 today and is making the most of it. The former Saint just kicked his first goal to go with 22 disposals, 15 marks and 116 SuperCoach points (and counting).

The Dees are running away with this one now.

3:27pm: HAS KOSI SEALED IT FOR DEES?

Kysaiah Pickett makes something out of nothing with a brilliant goal from the forward pocket.

His second for the afternoon extends Melbourne’s lead to 30 points with just under nine minutes left to play.

Hard to see where a big Bulldogs comeback would come from.

3:15pm: FINAL TEAMS, SUBS FOR PORT v EAGLES

The team sheets are in for Port Adelaide’s clash against West Coast and there are no late changes for either team,

Francis Evans will start as the sub for the Power. Campbell Chesser is the Eagles’ sub.

3:05pm: THREE-QUARTER TIME LEADERS

A quieter quarter for Max Gawn with just 28 points but a 75 point final term isn’t beyond him!

Huge game from Jack Billings after he scored just 14 points last week when he started as the sub.

126 – Max Gawn

89 – Clayton Oliver, Tim English, Marcus Bontempelli

84 – Jack Billings

82 – Lachie Bramble, Steven May

80 – Christian Petracca

79 – Tom McDonald

76 – Tom Liberatore

2:55pm: DOGS YOUNG GUN SUBBED

The Bulldogs have made a big call on their sub, taking star draftee Ryley Sanders out of the game five minutes before three quarter-time.

Caleb Daniel is now into the action.

Sanders, the third-most selected player in SuperCoach, has 15 disposals and 39 points to his name.

2:45pm: OUT OF HARMES WAY

More than 15,000 coaches selected Bulldogs recruit James Harmes hoping the experienced former Demon could prove a bargain at $258,300.

It’s not going too well so far.

Harmes has three kicks and five handballs halfway through the third quarter, and is using the footy at just 57 per cent efficiency. He has also given away a free kick.

Three tackles have helped him to 20 SuperCoach points.

2:20: HALFTMIE SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Max Gawn is owning this one. After scoring 72 points against Sydney last week, he has 98 at halftime. Gawn has two 200-plus point games in his career, does he have a third in his sights?

98 – Max Gawn

74 – Marcus Bontempelli

57 – Christian Petracca

2:12pm: ROOKIE WATCH

It’s been a quiet first half for defensive rookies in SuperCoach.

Demon Blake Howes and Dog Nick Coffield have 25 points each as we approach halftime, while mature-age Melbourne recruit Marty Hore has 23.

Ryley Sanders, the third-most selected player in the game, has made a solid start to his AFL career with 11 disposals and 33 points.

Demon Caleb Windsor is the pick of the cheapies so far with 50 points to his name.

1:47pm: CLARRY’S BACK TOO

Melbourne has the first two goals of the second quarter in a hurry to open up a handy buffer against the Bulldogs despite a slow start.

Clayton Oliver has had a hand in both goals and has a game-high 15 disposals.

1:38pm: MAX IS BACK IN TOWN

Max Gawn has had a dominant first quarter, racking up seven disposals, three marks, three score involvements and a game-high 64 SuperCoach points.

It’s starting to bring back memories of a famous SuperCoach game in round 3, 2016 when Gawn and Todd Goldstein went head to head in Hobart – and both scored 172 SuperCoach points.

QUARTER-TIME LEADERS

64 – Max Gawn

41 – Marcus Bontempelli

36 – Steven May

33 – Judd McVee

32 – Jack Viney

31 – Christian Salem

30 – Tim English, Jacob van Rooyen, Caleb Windor

1:28pm: MAX CAUGHT OUT BY GOAL REVIEW

A lengthy review has determined Max Gawn marked a wayward shot at goal by Cody Weightman a millimetre before it crossed the behind line.

That’s not great news for Max who had retreated to the wing and now has to jog back to take his kick. But it counts as an intercept mark for SuperCoach!

Gawn has started strongly as he looks to bounce back from a disappointing Round Zero.

1:02pm: WE’RE AWAY

Marcus Bontempelli wins the first clearance of the day and Aaron Naughton gives the Dogs the perfect start in brilliant sunshine at the MCG.

Clayton Oliver is starting the match on the bench. Ryley Sanders lined up at half-forward.

12:34pm: WHO ARE YOU WATCHING IN SUPERCOACH?

There have been some massive scores, and some stinkers, in a rollercoaster first round of SuperCoach. With three games to play, who do you need to stand up?

The most selected players in action today are cheapies Harley Reid (80 per cent of teams), Ryley Sanders (75 per cent) and Nick Coffield (60 per cent), followed by Marcus Bontempelli (52 per cent), Nat Fyfe (50 per cent), Max Gawn (49 per cent) and Demons cheapie Blake Howes (48 per cent).

More than 42 per cent of coaches have taken a punt on Dockers ruckman Luke Jackson, while some big Sunday PODs include Tom Liberatore (7 per cent), Josh Dunkley (4 per cent), and Clayton Oliver (3 per cent). Some left-field picks that appear in fewer than 0.1 per cent of sides include Jason Johannisen, Josh Treacy, Tom McDonald and Jack Petrucelle.

12pm: DOGS’ ALL-AUSTRALIAN SUB SHOCK

All-Australian premiership hero Caleb Daniel will start as the substitute in the Western Bulldogs’ first game of 2024.

The 175-game veteran has been named as the sub against Melbourne. The Demons’ sub is four-gamer Taj Woewodin.

The Herald Sun’s Sam Landsberger reported two weeks ago that Daniel, who has played 85 of the Dogs’ past 90 games – including all 23 last year – was under shock selection pressure entering the season.

In 2020, Daniel won the Charles Sutton Medal as the club’s best-and-fairest in the same year he was named in the All-Australian team. Last year Daniel placed fourth in the best-and-fairest.

The Bulldogs team will feature a host of new faces including former Saint Nick Coffield, ex-Hawk Lachie Bramble, former Demon James Harmes and star draftee Ryley Sanders.
