Jordan De Goey has officially signed a monster five-year contract extension with Collingwood — ending his 12 month contract saga.

The Magpies star has turned his back on free agency to remain with Collingwood just one day after reports emerged St Kilda and Essendon were both still in the hunt to win his signature.

He confirmed the news in an Instagram post on Friday morning.

Collingwood football boss Graham Wright also celebrated the news through a statement released by the club.

“We’re delighted Jordan has agreed to extend his contract to stay at Collingwood,” Wright said.

“Jordan is a talented footballer and his commitment to improve his game has seen him perform strongly this year, particularly during the back-end of the season and during the finals series where he was exciting to watch.

“We feel Jordan’s best football is in front of him and, as a Club, we will continue to support him as he grows as a player and as a person.”

It was reported earlier this week De Goey had rejected a five-year-deal because of uncertainty surrounding behavioural contract clauses that would have allowed the club to cut the contract after two years should he bring the football club into further disrepute.

The 26-year-old has been involved in a long list of scandals, most recently a Bali nightclub video that saw the club issue him a suspended fine and take back an initial four-year deal that had been sitting on the table. After an impressive second half of the season in Collingwood’s run through to a preliminary final, the football club increased its offer as rival clubs prepared to swoop.

The deal struck between De Goey’s management and the football club will reportedly still involve clauses that will allow the football club to terminate the deal if he acts up in the first two seasons.

The deal will take him through to the end of the 2027 season.

It is hugE news for Collingwood with the club now able to celebrate the contract extension at its best and fairest awards on Friday night.

It is a dramatic turnaround for both parties in the wake of the Bali nightclub video scandal.

At the time, De Goey took an indefinite leave of absence and it was reported he was “disillusioned” with the football club over its handling of the situation which saw him deliver a stage-managed apology for his behaviour.

The club was also pressured to let him walk out the door.

De Goey was fined $10,000 by the AFL in March for his involvement in a late-night incident in New York last year.

He has a long list of other offences as well, including road offences such as speeding while driving a sports car as a P-plater, driving while suspended and using a handheld device, drink-driving on his P-plates, and lying to Collingwood after breaking his hand in a bar fight.

Hammer blow as Saints left at the altar

St Kilda has been left to pick up the pieces with its six months of talks with Jordan De Goey ending with nothing to show for it.

The club was the biggest threat to Collingwood losing De Goey and Saints list boss James Gallagher said less than 24 hours before De Goey made his decision the club was shaping its trade period around its offer to the Pies star.

Channel 7 journalist Tom Browne reported on Thursday night: “This is now a cliffhanger in terms of the contract for his services.

“Collingwood, tonight, don’t know his response. St Kilda now genuinely think they’re a chance of landing Jordan De Goey and pulling off what could be an absolutely massive coup, remembering they’re unlikely to have the behavioural clauses, or at least as stringently as Collingwood is insisting on.”

Essendon was also in the fight with leading journalist Damian Barrett reporting on Thursday the club “hasn’t given up hope” of getting him to sign on.
