‘Dumb person’: Footy world in disbelief at De Goey scandal

Footy commentators, including Garry Lyon, have torched Jordan De Goey after a nightclub scandal that could cost him millions.

The footy world has reacted with disbelief as another Jordan De Goey nightclub scandal continues to swirl.

The Magpies star’s future at Collingwood is more clouded than ever after videos posted on Instagram showed him acting in a vulgar fashion.

Shocking video footage of the 26-year-old partying in Bali has spread across the internet. One clip captured a moment where the footballer appears to attempt to expose a mystery woman’s breasts inside a Bali nightclub.

Separate footage also shows him making rude hand gestures.

It comes after he was in March fined $10,000 by the AFL for his involvement in a late-night incident in New York last year.

He pleaded guilty to a downgraded charge of harassment in the second degree having first pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and harassment. Charges of forcible touching were also dropped.

The Collingwood star was already facing criticism for his decision to jet away to Bali ahead of his team’s bye round — now his off-field behaviour is again making headlines.

De Goey left the country following the Magpies’ big victory of the Demons in the annual Queen’s Birthday clash on Monday.

Collingwood next plays the Giants on Sunday, June 26.

De Goey is expected back at the club on Monday.

One video posted on Instagram shows De Goey interacting with a mystery woman before she is seen batting him away after an apparent attempt to expose her breasts as she lay on a bar.

He is also seen making a crude gesture towards a person filming with a camera where he appears to mimic a sex act with his tongue and fingers.

In other content posted to Instagram, De Goey is also seen drinking while standing inside a pool alongside other men and women.

The Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph told Fox Footy on Friday night that Collingwood has privately conceded it is a “really poor look” for De Goey.

Football commentators, including Demons great Garry Lyon and Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd, have scorched De Goey for his behaviour.

Lyon told Fox Footy on Friday night De Goey’s behaviour has to be “stamped out”.

“There is an issue with the female involved, and we’re not suggesting this is not consensual, but that’s entitled behaviour that’s not acceptable in any way, shape or form,” Lyon said.

“The public grabbing of someone’s top in a public environment like that, that is entitled behaviour that has to be stamped out. That’s the behaviour that should get players into more trouble.”

Brisbane Lions icon Jonathan Brown said De Goey acted “without commonsense”.

Collingwood legend Tony Shaw told 3AW Radio on Friday night the Magpies should sack De Goey if he’s involved in any further unsavoury behaviour.

“When you’re not smart you make dumb decisions,” he said.

“He’s probably not a smart person. I don’t think he’s a smart person. The problem is, what people see as rude, obscene, whatever, this kid does not understand that people will see it that way. He has to be told.

“It’s not a hanging offence. But he has got to understand that there are standards, as a person, not as a footballer, about what you do in public.”

Stars speculate De Goey may lose millions

Shaw said Collingwood still wants to re-sign De Goey to a contract extension.

He is heading into free-agency this trade period.

Recent reports suggest De Goey is in line for a $4 million deal across five seasons.

After his latest indiscretion, Lloyd says Collingwood should only offer a two-year contract.

He said other clubs would be losing interest in trying to poach De Goey because of his reputation as a “party boy”.

Saints great Nick Riewoldt also said De Goey’s standing with rival clubs, his own club and his teammates has fallen.

“You get a pretty good indication of someone’s professionalism and how much they care about their careers when you look at the choices that they make,” he said.

“Jordan De Goey and every player are entitled to go overseas if they want a break, but it’s a choice. And I think in this case, Jordan has chosen indulgence over discipline. That’s something all clubs are going to look at, Collingwood are going to look at, his teammates are going to look at. At the moment, unfortunately, that seems to be a pretty regular theme for him, that he chooses indulgence over discipline, from a pure football point of view.”

Cornes scorches De Goey for mid-season holiday

It comes one day after Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes said De Goey had made a “stupid” decision by taking off for a holiday overseas in the middle of the AFL season.

“How could you think going to Bali in the mid-season break when you’re Jordan De Goey was a good idea?” Cornes said on SEN’s Whateley.

“I don’t care — come for me as hard as you want on this opinion. It is a stupid thing for Jordan De Goey to do to go to Bali at this stage of his career and at this stage of the season.

“He may just be sitting by the pool in Bali like he would be doing on the Gold Coast, but I would think that in the past he has been sucked into temptation and I would think it is easier to be sucked into temptation in Bali than it is somewhere in Victoria or Queensland.

“With the issues he’s had overseas before in New York, he remains unsigned, everything is flying at Collingwood. Everything is going beautifully. They’ve forgiven him and he’s been OK, his form is probably playing to 70 per cent of his potential and has a level to go.

“I just think it’s one of the more bizarre decisions that I’ve seen. To think that Collingwood would allow him to do that and people would say ‘hang on, he’s a grown man and he can do what he wants, it’s his four days off’.

“In the middle of the year? These players get 12 weeks off plus mandatory four-day breaks, I would think if you’re going to do that, that would be a time to do it at the end of the year.

“Collingwood fans, anyone, come at me as hard as you want, it is a dumb thing for De Goey to do to go to Bali in the middle of the year.”
