Defender Ryan Burton is the latest victim of Port Adelaide’s selection squeeze.
A week after captain Tom Jonas was overlooked at selection, Burton was dropped for Friday night’s match against the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium.
The returns of spearhead Charlie Dixon (quad) and former skipper Travis Boak (ribs) have boosted the Power’s line-up, forcing a reshuffle.
Burton, wingman Riley Bonner and key forward Ollie Lord have been omitted, while last week’s substitute, Josh Sinn, comes into the 22.
Captain Tom Jonas has been overlooked for a second consecutive week.
Power coach Ken Hinkley said Burton, who had finished in the top 10 of the club champion count the past two seasons, “by his own admission and ours” had been a little down on form.
“We’ve been pretty consistent that we’ll base selection on performance,” Hinkley said.
“We’re in pretty good form … and have got some high quality players coming back into the side.
“We’ve mixed Ryan around a little bit, playing him forward and back, but I think the flexibility of Travis coming back into the team allows us to make different changes.
“Our backline’s been our strongest performing area … and they’re keeping some really experienced players out.”
Dixon has been sidelined for the past four matches and Boak has missed two in a row.
Hinkley backed Jonas to return to the AFL side, saying he felt for him because he knew how much he wanted to play.
The veteran backman wore the No. 35 prison-bar guernsey at training on Wednesday, acknowledging his squad-first attitude and performance in his first SANFL game since 2015.
“I thought he played really well in the Magpies but the (AFL) team’s in pretty good nick,” Hinkley said.
“Just because he misses a week or two, doesn’t send any other message other than you need to play well to get back in.”
Hinkley liked the power and speed that Sinn and half-back Lachie Jones added to the side.
The coach hoped Sinn, the club’s top draft pick at No. 12 in 2021, had turned a corner after battling injuries to start his career.
“We want to make sure we get some good AFL minutes into Josh Sinn as quick as we can and see where that goes,” he said.
Ruckman Scott Lycett’s battle with All-Australian contender Tim English looms as one of Friday night’s most intriguing.
English dominated their Gather Round match-up, leading to Lycett being subbed off early, but the Power big man had returned to form the past few weeks.
“We’re really comfortable that if Scott can handle (Max) Gawn and (Brodie) Grundy, Nankervis and two ruckmen last week, that he can get the job done for us,” Hinkley said.
Adelaide has recalled young defender Josh Worrell, who replaces injured vice-captain Tom Doedee for Saturday afternoon’s clash with West Coast.
