AFL 2024: SuperCoach recap, full scores from Sydney’s round 10 win over Carlton

SuperCoach has a new master tagger to avoid at all costs after James Jordon’s latest shutdown job took out Sam Walsh. See full take aways and recap Sydney’s win over Carlton here.

SuperCoach AFL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 10

Sydney has sounded an emphatic warning to its premiership rivals and put Carlton’s top-eight spot in jeopardy with a commanding win in front of one of the biggest SCG crowds in AFL history.

More than 44,000 fans turned out to watch the Swans overcome an early 26-point deficit and blow Carlton away in lopsided second and third quarters.

The victory was inspired by best afield Chad Warner, but the prolific on-baller had a host of allies who helped clinch Sydney’s ninth win of the season in style.

Recap all of Friday night’s SuperCoach analysis and updates below.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS

1. NEVER DOUBT HEENEY

Isaac Heeney isn’t Brownlow favourite for no reason. He played a bit more forward tonight than he has so far this season and was only on 40 points at halftime after a quiet second quarter. What unfolded after that was why Heeney looks to be the clear F1 this year. Heeney scored 50 points in the third quarter as Sydney surged, then brought up his ton with his third goal early in the last quarter. Those SuperCoaches who still don’t have Heeney must have thought he would lose a fair bit of value with a break even of 134, but he’s not getting much cheaper anytime soon.

2. JORDON IS THE NEW DE BOER

Lachie Whitfield. Noah Anderson. Jordan Clark. And now Sam Walsh. James Jordon is building a formidable list of tagging victims. Walsh had seven disposals and a goal at quarter time for 37 SuperCoach points and looked like he might threaten the 150-point mark. Then Jordon went full Matt De Boer after letting his tag slip in the first 30 minutes. Walsh wasn’t helped by Sydney’s commanding performance, but it was Jordon’s discipline in the last three quarters that reeled the prolific Blue in to less than 90 SuperCoach points. Sydney has Western Bulldogs next week and Geelong the week after. Watch out Bailey Dale and either Tom Stewart or Max Holmes.

3. GULDEN IS CHEAP - AND GETTING CHEAPER

Errol Gulden went into Friday night’s game having already lost more than $60k on his SuperCoach starting price. With only four tons in the first nine rounds, one of the breakout stars of last year hasn’t had the same allure for SuperCoaches chasing a bargain this year. But it’s worth putting him on your black book, especially when we’ll want to be trading in premiums coming off the round 12 bye in a few weeks’ time. You would want to see his form turn in the next few weeks, but a player of Gulden’s class at anything close to $500k would be crazy value and a great way to finish your midfield.

FULLTIME: SWANS BY 52 POINTS

That was some statement by the Swans — and plenty to like too for those with Sydney players in their SuperCoach teams.

Brodie Grundy was huge in the second half to get to 113 points, ditto Isaac Heeney who put on 78 points after the main break to finish with 118.

James Jordon completely took Sam Walsh out of the contest, limiting him to 47 points after quarter-time as the Blues star finished on 84.

Nic Newman (148), Blake Acres (102) and Marc Pittonet (100) were the only Blues to crack triple figures.

10.05PM: HEENEY BREAK EVEN WATCH

We’ve known for a fair while Sydney is going to win this game, so I’ve turned my attention to the real stuff — Isaac Heeney’s break even.

The F1 of 2024 is $631k and needs to score 132 to hold his price.

With eight minutes left in the game, Heeney was on 107.

There’s also a very large crowd in, one of the biggest in SCG history.

They’ll be going home very happy — apart from the travelling Blues supporters anyway.

THREE-QUARTER-TIME: SENSATIONAL SWANS BY 45

Remember when Carlton kicked the first four goals of this game?

It has been an absolute annihlation since and it’s reflected in tonight’s SuperCoach scores.

Since that run at the start of the match Sydney has kicked 14 goals to three and it’s a matter of the Swans by how much with a quarter left.

The worrying factor for Carlton is its percentage — which was already shaky due to so many close wins — is copping a huge hit.

Collingwood and Fremantle will both have the opportunity to boot the Blues from the top eight this weekend too.

Back on the Jacob Weitering injury, there are reports it’s a corked thigh that forced him off at halftime.

9.35PM: JORDAN THE NEW NEMESIS

Apologies to hit you with my own SuperCoach memes, but surely this applies to James Jordon.

Jordon took down Jordan Clark last week, has done a job on Noah Anderson and completely blanketed Lachie Whitfield in the recent Sydney derby.

Tonight he’s had Sam Walsh in his sights and although Walsh is still a chance of a SuperCoach ton, his influence has been completely curtailed since quarter-time.

Anyway, here are those words in meme form.

9.23PM: NEVER DOUBT HEENEY

I was actually silly enough to think Isaac Heeney might not ton tonight when he was stuck on 40 points for a while.

As you can see in the live points tracker above, he’s now gone past 70 and is well on track to hit triple figures for the ninth time in 10 games this year.

His other score? 98.

More good news, Sydney’s midfield dominance is translating to Brodie Grundy’s score. He had slowed but is also nearing 70 points.

9.10PM: WEITERING SUBBED

Disaster for Carlton with defensive general Jacob Weitering subbed at the main break.

Weitering played on after copping a knock in the first quarter but appeared in discomfort throughout and has been taken out of the game for Jack Carroll.

He appeared to be hurt after colliding with Brodie Kemp while attempting to jump into a marking contest.

Carlton is in a world of pain on the injury front already, with Adam Cerra, Sam Docherty, Adam Saad and Matt Cottrell among the senior regulars sidelined.

It’s a bit like that scene from The Simpsons where Sideshow Bob keeps walking into rakes at Carlton this year.

HALFTIME: SWANS BY 14, WARNER CLOSES ON TON

Sorry if you’re not a cricket fan — I have been trying to recall the last time a Warner dominate an hour of sport at the SCG quite like this.

I haven’t had time to go through every innings, but David Warner’s 122 not out off 103 balls in a Test match against the West Indies stands out.

Anyway, I digress.

My point is that Chad Warner is playing one of the games of his life, has almost hit triple figures and has launched Sydney to a halftime lead at the SCG.

Warner has 17 disposals, has kicked one goal and two behinds and also has four marks.

The only player with more SuperCoach points is Mr Efficient Nic Newman, who hit the ton just before halftime after his 22nd disposal.

Unfortunately, he got scaled down a couple at halftime so was only credited with a 99-point half.

Sam Walsh won two late freekicks to pass 50 after being well held by James Jordon, while Isaac Heeney was much quieter and is only on 41.

Walsh was stuck on 41 points for most of the quarter then scored 16 in the last 90 seconds of the quarter to salvage his half.

Sydney has kicked the last six goals of the game.

8.40PM:TAG NEWMAN? BLUES DEFENDER RUNNING HOT

Nic Newman has a three-round average of 106.7, is already on 96 points tonight and is only in 1.5 per cent of SuperCoach teams.

That’s what we call a serious POD (point of difference).

Newman has gone to another level since Adam Saad was injured, becoming the main distributor out of the Carlton backline.

Newman has more points than popular picks Dan Houston, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Hayden Young and Lachie Whitfield in the past three rounds.

His influence tonight led to a question about whether Sydney should abandon its Sam Walsh tag and send James Jordon to Newman.

“Not with the momentum going Sydney’s way,” says Luke Hodge on Channel 7.

8.25PM: WHERE’S THE PITTONET LOVE?

Most SuperCoaches want Max Gawn and Tim English as their finishing ruck combination — with good reason.

While Rowan Marshall, Lloyd Meek and Tristan Xerri are going well too, the forgotten man seems to be Marc Pittonet.

A few years ago when he broke out, Pittonet was a great SuperCoach mid-season cash cow.

But in the past two seasons he has averaged 70.1 and 70.2, a long way from the best big men.

Something seems to have changed this year though.

Pittonet started at $392k, has averaged 104 in the past month and will likely be over $500k after this week.

Tonight he’s getting the better of Brodie Grundy, sitting on 42 points to Grundy’s 22.

QUARTER-TIME: BLUES BY 9, WALSH, HEENEY RUN RIOT

SuperCoaches and Carlton fans can be happy with what they have seen so far.

While Sydney hit back after a fast start by the Blues, Carlton holds a nine-point advantage at the first break.

Jake Lloyd had a chance to cut the deficit after the siren, but his shot from about 45m landed short.

Two of the most popular SuperCoach players in this match have been everywhere.

Sam Walsh has seven disposals, has kicked a goal and has two clearances.

Isaac Heeney was central to the Swans’ comeback with nine disposals and two tackles.

8.05PM: NEW ROLE FOR WILLIAMS

Most SuperCoaches would have traded Zac Williams out last week when he was managed by Carlton.

Those who held are in for an interesting ride with Williams moving to half forward tonight.

He’s done a few nice things in the first quarter but 22 mins in was only on nine points.

On the plus side, if this becomes a regular thing he might get DPP?

Meanwhile, Sam Walsh is flying on 35 points while Isaac Heeney leads all Swans with 29.

It’s not like SuperCoaches (or me) to overrreact to early tag concerns at all is it?

7.55PM: HORROR HARRY MISS AFTER BLUE BLITZ

Oh Harry.

Harry McKay has been so reliable in front of goal this year but misses from 10m out as Carlton looked to make it four successive goals to start the game at the SCG.

McKay has one and Charlie Curnow, Mitch McGovern and Matt Owies have also kicked goals to give the Blues a 27-1 lead midway through the first quarter.

“That is an amazing miss...tried to kick the flesh off it,” says Brian Taylor in commentary of McKay’s blunder.

7.45PM: EARLY MATCH UP WATCH

Matt Kennedy is running with Isaac Heeney after putting the clamps on Christian Petracca in the first half last week.

Jacob Weitering looks to have Joel Amartey, Dane Rampe is giving up height to Tom De Koning, Lewis Melican on is Charlie Curnow and Aaron Francis has Harry McKay.

Bad news for Sam Walsh owners — he’s got the James Jordon tag.

7.35PM: HUGE JOB FOR SWAN AFTER EXTENSION

Lewis Melican had some good news this week with confirmation from Lachlan McKirdy he has triggered a contract extension to stay with Sydney for 2025.

Tonight, in a defence missing Tom McCartin, he’s set to get the job on either Harry McKay or Charlie Curnow.

The Swans held Curnow to one goal and Harry McKay goal-less in last year’s elimination final, but McKay in particular has been a different beast this year.

And meanwhile, in Tasmania Jack Riewoldt is kicking goals.

7.10PM: WHAT’S AT STAKE TONIGHT

Sydney can’t lose top spot on the ladder this round after Geelong’s heavy defeat to Gold Coast in Darwin.

Remarkably, there’s a 39 per cent gap between the teams ranked first and second on the table.

The Swans will go 10 points clear of third-placed Essendon if they triumph tonight, although the Bombers will be favoured to defeat North Melbourne on Sunday.

Injury-hit Carlton risks falling out of the top eight if it loses at the SCG.

The Blues dropped to eighth after Gold Coast surged to sixth last night, with Collingwood (ninth) and Fremantle (10th) lurking just outside the top eight.

A defeat could mean Carlton finishes the round in 10th despite winning six of its first 10 games — that’s how close it is from third to 10th.

6.55PM: STAR SWAN ‘WANTS TO STAY’

Sydney free agent Will Hayward has become one of the hottest players on the market after booting 19 goals in nine games to start the season.

Tonight’s opponent Carlton is one of the club’s in the race for Hayward, who has also been heavily courted by clubs in his native South Australia.

Swans assistant coach Leon Cameron told Fox Footy they were optimistic a deal would be struck and that Hayward wanted to stay in the Harbour City.

More below from Jon Ralph.

6.45PM: SUBS ARE LOCKED IN

Sub specialist Jack Carroll has been named as Carlton’s substitute tonight, while Braeden Campbell has been named as Sydney’s.

There are no late changes for either side.

Our man on the spot Lachie McKirdy is tipping Robbie Fox to take the role which Matt Roberts has been filling as a defender/wingman.

Roberts — one of the top SuperCoach cash cows of the year — has been left out tonight.

He still features in more than 26,000 teams despite 27,141 coaches trading Roberts this week — banking a $231k profit in the process.

There have been some special scenes pre-match at the SCG as the teams prepare to take the field in indigenous round.

6.35PM: WHO WON THE FAILED PAPLEY TRADE?

It’s five years since Tom Papley asked for a trade to Victoria amid a merry-go-round that included Joe Daniher wanting to move to Sydney.

We know, a lot has happened since then.

We’ve analysed what the failed trade meant for the Blues and Swans as they prepare to meet in a rematch of last year’s elimination final.

Blues fans, try not to think about Papley buzzing around at the feet of Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow.

Trust me, it doesn’t do you any good.

6PM: HOW DO BLUES STOP HEENEY?

Isaac Heeney has scored 97, 94 and 128 SuperCoach points in his last three games against Carlton — and that wasn’t playing as a midfielder.

The current Brownlow Medal favourite, Heeney is averaging 129.6 points this season and his emergence as one of the AFL’s premier on-ballers has been one of the reasons Swans favourite Luke Parker is stuck in the VFL.

Maybe a former teammate in George Hewett gets the job tonight?

On the flip side, James Rowbottom is likely to watch one of Sam Walsh and Patrick Cripps at the stoppages.

The tackle machine has already done some big jobs for the Swans this season.

Cripps is second favourite to win his second Brownlow, equal in the market with Zach Merrett and a resurgent Nick Daicos.

If you’re asking me, Daicos will win it.
