AFL 2022: Carlton trades fringe midfielder Will Setterfield to Essendon in exchange of late picks
Will Setterfield has become the AFL’s newest three-club player after Carlton traded the midfielder to Essendon.

Will Setterfield will get a second fresh start after Carlton traded the fringe midfielder and ex-Giant to Essendon on Monday.
The Blues sent Setterfield and pick 68 to the Bombers for a future fourth-round selection.
Essendon has tracked Setterfield closely since before he joined Greater Western Sydney at No.5 in the 2016 draft and tried to get him when he chose to move to Victoria two years later.
The 24-year-old played 34 games across his first two seasons at Carlton but only 21 in the last two years after Adam Cerra, George Hewett and Jack Martin arrived from rival clubs.
Setterfield should have greater midfield opportunities at the Bombers, with his 192cm frame set to provide a point of difference.
“I’m absolutely pumped to be joining the Bombers and I can’t wait to get started,” Setterfield said.
“It’s an exciting time for the football club with Brad Scott taking over as coach and I’m looking forward to getting to work with him as well as meeting my new teammates and building a strong connection with them.
“I feel that I play my best football as an inside midfielder and after speaking with Brad recently; I’m extremely excited and looking forward to the opportunity to pull on the red and black each week.”
Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro was “thrilled” to secure Setterfield.
“We have rated Will highly ever since the 2016 draft, so to have him on board is fantastic,” Dodoro said.
“Our objective for this trade period was to get a big-bodied inside midfielder and at 192cm, Will is exactly that.
“Will has the potential to be an excellent footballer and we look forward to seeing his growth once at the club.”
