TOUCH FOOTBALL: Kearneys Spring Sports Complex is arguably the Garden City’s busiest ‘athletic’ facility.
Week-in, week-out, thousands of junior and senior players put their touch football skills to the test across the sprawling fields.
Some of Queensland and Australia’s greatest players first picked up a ball at Kearneys Spring before going on to play at the highest level.
The 2022/23 Toowoomba Touch Association summer season recently started and current generation of juniors are proving the future of touch in the region is bright.
The Chronicle were on hand to capture the action of some recent games and to speak to a few coaches helping from the sidelines.
Saints under-10 girls
“I couldn’t be more proud of how well the girls are progressing so far,” coach Michael Wardle said.
“They’ve shown improvements in lot of areas every game so far.
“We set mini skill or physical goals each game, things like not dropping the ball for five straight sets and things like but one of the things that has impressed me most is their attitude.
“All the girls work really well as a team, they listen, work hard and want to improve as much as they can.
“It’s been a real pleasure coaching them.”
Rebels under-10 girls
Brooke Wood was filling in on the sideline on Friday, her first time coaching her daughter’s team, but she has been avid and interested supporter for a long time.
“I had to fill because our regular coach was unavailable,” she said.
“The thing that impresses me most is how quickly they’ve gelled as a team.
“A lot of the girls have been playing for a while now and most of them are friends at school but this is the first time nearly all them have played in the same side.
“We’ve got a really good mix of girls who all work hard and enjoy themselves.”
