The RBA’s decision to fob off the monarch from their more than $500,000 redesign of the $5 note has heads wobbling.
In a rebuttal the Australian Monarchist League referred to the change as “politically motived and divisive” and submitted a formal request to the RBA with their own design which included King Charles III alongside Indigenous artwork.
A debate was sparked on social media over who should be the face of the $5 note, with some readers suggesting the likes of Steve Irwin and Bluey.

‘Throw an Aussie icon on it’
A number of readers suggested an Australian icon should take the place of Queen Elizabeth II on the $5 note.
“Throw an actual Aussie icon on it Steve Irwin deserves it,” Wade Tzvetkoff wrote.
“How about Australians like Seve Irwin or other known Australian icons,” Leann Ziebell wrote.
“We want Bluey and Bingo” Warren Mienert wrote.
“Like to see David Gulpilil first. Charles may be king, he sure ain’t Australian,” Ronna Sheppard wrote.
‘This government just loves spending taxpayers’ money’
The overarching opinion of readers was that King Charles should be included on the design of the $5 note, while many also took aim at the significant cost to taxpayers to create the design in the first place.
“Half a million to consult on the image, this government just loves spending taxpayers' money,” Ross Cameron wrote.
“No matter what it’s going to be done as always as anyone who pays tax has to pay for that and everything else. Imagine if we went on the government payment and no one paid tax,” Katrina Sewell wrote.
“Leave it as is that way you would save a lot of money,” Jenny Hill wrote.
