Wet weather, strong winds uproots tree, blocks highway

WET weather and strong winds uprooted a tree which blocked part of the New England Highway early this morning.

WET weather and strong winds uprooted a tree which blocked part of the New England Highway early this morning.

Motorists travelling towards Toowoomba were hit with delays and diversions as emergency crews cleared the tree from the roadway.

The felled tree was reported about 5.30am after a number of motorists nearly collided with it in the early morning fog near Hi Winds Road at Blue Mountain Heights.

The tree blocked the inbound to Toowoomba lanes of the New England Highway for about two hours.

Sergeant Greg Wheeler said extra vigilance was needed in wet and foggy conditions which would hide road hazards.

"Drive according to the conditions and should motorists see a car with hazard lights switched on, they should consider there are changed traffic conditions ahead," he said.

Sgt Wheeler urged motorists to report traffic hazards.
