TOOWOOMBA'S John Wagner is supporting a proposal for an air-freight hub in New South Wales.
The Wagner Group made history after building the country's first private international cargo and passenger airport at Wellcamp two years ago.
Other regional councils are seeking his expertise with similar projects after the success of the airport.
The Wagner Group signed an memorandum of understanding with the Edward River Council to develop the air-freight centre at Deniliquin in New South Wales.
The idea was to take advantage of Wellcamp's supply chain for fresh produce into Asia via Toowoomba.
Mr Wagner recently visited Riverina to discuss the proposal for the hub.
Mr Wagner was contributing his expertise only to the project, but it could extend to a cold-storage facility once government funding was approved.
The council is hoping for $5 million to build a 2km runway funded by the Building Better Regions program along with matching funds from the New South Wales government.
The council is also prepared to contribute $3.5 million to the project.
John Wagner told Queensland Country Life the proposal made a lot of sense.
He said he had already spoken to a number of people who wanted to invest.
"The capital costs to build their own airport to freight produce direct to Asia would be $150 million - that's too far-fetched for them," he said.
"They have good product, some of which just needs processors, in the fruit, vege and beef lines."
Mr Wagner said the hub would totally transform the region in five years if it was up and running.
