Second man charged after dad shot in back at Wonthaggi home

Police have charged another man over a shooting at a home in Wonthaggi that wounded a Gippsland father of two while a young girl was asleep inside.

Kevin Mclean was visiting a woman at a home on Fahey St in Wonthaggi on January 12 when a fight broke out about 2am.

Ms Mclean was shot in the back during the ordeal, which unfolded as a 10-year-old girl slept inside the unit.

The gunman fled the scene, followed by an accomplice riding a motorbike.

Mr Mclean was flown to The Alfred hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He underwent emergency surgery to remove the bullet fragments from his back.

A neighbour reported seeing Mr Mclean staggering outside the property after the shooting.

“He just kind of waddled and was groaning and said, ‘This hurts, this hurts’,” the resident told 9News.

CCTV footage showed a ute driving past the block of units, knocking down a light pole and smashing into nearby cars.

Armed Crime Squad detectives initially charged a 28-year-old Wonthaggi man, who was already banned from using guns, over the gunfight.

He was charged with conduct endangering life, recklessly causing serious injury, intentionally causing injury, reckless causing injury, prohibited person possessing a firearm, criminal damage, possessing ammunition round, possessing cannabis, possessing fireworks and driving while disqualified.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old Leongatha man was slapped with a string of drug and weapons charges on January 14 over a separate incident.

He has now also been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, intentionally causing injury, conduct endangering life, prohibited person using firearm and possessing explosive substance over the shooting.

He will appear at the Korumburra Magistrates’ Court on February 13.

The 28-year-old will appear at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court on April 4.
