Chemicals which would have manufactured meth worth $500m have been seized on an isolated farm in one of the state’s biggest precursor materials raids.
Clandestine laboratory squad detectives made their move this week, swooping on a property at Serviceton in the Wimmera as part of an 20-month investigation into the Breaking Bad-style syndicate.
Officers from the CSL and Horsham CIU found 50 drums of precursor chemicals weighing 10 tonnes as they carried out the search warrant.
The chemicals would have been capable of manufacturing up to five tonnes of methylamphetamine.
Two unsecured guns, ammunition and a small amount of methylamphetamine was seized.
A 59-year-old man was arrested at the scene and released pending further inquiries.
The seizure came as part of an investigation into a drug trafficking syndicate which has resulted in other significant results since February this year.
They included the uncovering of clandestine labs in the suburbs of Coburg North, Pascoe Vale and Monegeetta, just north of Melbourne.
Commercial quantities of methylamphetamine, amphetamine and cannabis have been seized.
Part of the operation was the confiscation of 6kg of MDMA allegedly hidden in the sleeping bag of a man and woman about to board the Spirit of Tasmania ferry at Geelong on August 21.
A 44-year-old Newport man was charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of MDMA and remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 26.
Stolen vehicles and motorcycles worth more than $1 million and which were part of a rebirthing operation were recovered in the operation.
Eight people have, so far, been charged and eight guns seized
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
