AFL young gun Tarryn Thomas has been charged over an alleged revenge porn threat following a three month police investigation.

Victoria Police charged Thomas, 22, with a single count of threatening to distribute an intimate image.

The North Melbourne player was also stopped by police while driving with a suspended licence during the Christmas break.

“The club has informed the AFL’s Integrity Unit and the AFLPA on both matters and the club will continue to work with Thomas regarding behavioural expectations,” North Melbourne football club said in a statement.

“North Melbourne will not make any further comment at this time.”

Thomas’s case was heard in the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday but he did not appear in person.

His lawyer, from law firm Balmer Associates, appeared on his behalf. The firm declined to provide a comment.

In October the Herald Sun revealed Thomas was caught up in a police investigation amid allegations of malicious behaviour to a former partner.

Thomas found himself under scrutiny over a recent dispute with his ex-girlfriend.

The No.8 draft pick in 2018, he is regarded as one of North’s most promising players. He signed a two-year contract extension at the start of 2022, but played only 10 games last year as he struggled following the death of his grandmother.

“In Tarryn’s situation, he had some things going on in his life,” new coach Alastair Clarkson said in late August.

“It is a good reminder that sometimes what goes on in life is much more important than what happens in a footy club.”

In July last year Thomas’s car was impounded when he was stopped by a booze bus site and found not to have a valid licence. Police confirmed a 22-year-old man was found to have been driving on a suspended licence on King St, West Melbourne.

The man was forced to pay $878.50 and his Mercedes-Benz coupe was impounded for 30 days.

On Tuesday night Thomas posted photos after a visit to a crab restaurant in the Docklands.

He will next face the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ court on March 28.
