‘It really is wild. My dad was right there in a wheelchair,’ Daniela, the daughter of 66-year-old Mary Iviglia says

The daughter of a 66-year-old woman who was run over by an alleged car thief has told of the “wild” split second moment the incident unfolded and how her brave mum is staying in good spirits despite the horror injuries.

The horrific incident happened at Casey Hospital on Wednesday.

The family of a woman who was allegedly carjacked before she was run over while taking her husband to hospital feared it may have been “the end” for their mother.

Mary Iviglia, 66, remains in the intensive care unit at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne after the horrific alleged carjacking at Casey Hospital on Wednesday morning.

Ms Iviglia’s daughter, Daniela, told the Herald Sun her mother is “doing all right” as she recovers from several broken ribs and a tyre mark across her body.

The 37-year-old, who was visiting her “brave” mother on Thursday afternoon, said she was in relatively good spirits despite the awful injuries she sustained.

“She’s trying to just concentrate on the positives. Physically, she’s in pretty bad shape, it’s hard to see it,” she told the Herald Sun.

“She’s obviously got cuts and bruises all over. Part of her skull is fractured around her eye socket and all of her ribs are broken on her left side.

“There was a tyre mark over her body. But she can see and is talking. I think she’s putting on a brave face.

“She’s sitting somewhat upright, so it might not be as bad as they initially thought, which is a relief.”

The 25-year-old man accused of carrying out the terrifying daylight attack, Adam Barry, faced court on Thursday and will remain behind bars for at least the next two weeks.

He is accused of jumping in the 66-year-old’s Ford Territory in the carpark at Casey Hospital and is then accused of striking her with the car when she tried to intervene.

Mr Barry, of no fixed address, did not apply for bail after he was arrested on the Bass Coast on Wednesday night.

Daniela and her father, who was being taken into the emergency bay at hospital in a wheelchair on Wednesday, say they feared the Beaconsfield Upper woman would not survive.

Daniela said her mother’s Ford Territory, which was allegedly found in Pioneer Bay, was not left running in the few seconds she left it unguarded.

“She was really lucky, it could have been the end,” she added.

“My mum literally went back to get her handbag, and that was it. She had taken him in and came back to the car to grab her bag from the car, and that’s when it all happened.

“It really is wild. My dad was right there in a wheelchair, I can’t imagine what has to be wrong with a person to do something like that.”

Mr Barry will face court again on May 12.
