A woman is dead after falling from a cliff at rock climbing hot spot Mt Arapiles.

Emergency crews were called to rescue a 69-year-old woman on Tuesday afternoon following reports she was unresponsive.

SES volunteers were called to the scene to assist in a “high angle rescue” along with other emergency services to try to reach the fallen woman who had reportedly fallen and landed on a ledge at about 3.40pm.

Police confirmed the woman died following the fall.

“Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of a climber in Arapiles,” A Victoria Police statement said

“It is understood the climber fell from a cliff near Centenary Park Access Track.

“The climber, who is yet-to-be-formally identified, died at the scene and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”

The incident comes days after Mt Arapiles has been in the news due to plans by Parks Victoria to close areas of the mountain to climbers, sparking fury within the rock climbing community.

The state government and Parks Victoria cited secretive cultural heritage investigations as the reason behind the closures.

It has led to petitions by climbers and locals and claims from the Natimuk community – the town located nearest the mountain – that the ban will cripple the area.

Natimuk local Wayne Webb who owns The Climbing Shop told the Herald Sun he was scared for the town’s future following the announcement.

“It’s going to ruin the town. It’s going to destroy the town. It’s going to kill the town,” he said.
