Wealthy arts patron Jennifer Shaw is selling her South Yarra mansion for more than $40m, which could shatter its suburb’s home price record.

Property records revealed Jennifer Shaw’s name on the title of the expansive, five-bedroom property in Melbourne’s inner south.

It is understood Ms Shaw encouraged her mother in the 1970s to purchase a historic building in Melbourne’s CBD, where the jewellery company Kozminsky Studio operated for more than 150 years, and where she worked at the time.

The building at 421 Bourke St was bought by her parents for $295,000 and was later sold for $7.6m in 2017.

She also donated an escribed gold flask originally gifted in 1900 to General Sir Redvers Buller VS, a celebrated military hero, to the National Gallery of Victoria in 2017, designed by Melbourne jewellers Henry Newman & Sons.

Now Ms Shaw is selling her lavish South Yarra mansion with a $40m-$43m price tag.

The current address that holds the crown for the suburb’s most expensive home is 44-48 Marne St, which sold for $36m in December 2018, CoreLogic records reveal.

Marshall White Stonnington director Marcus Chiminello is managing the listing and has been contacted for comment.

Melbourne architects Powel & Glenn finished redesigning the South Yarra pad last year that was originally built in the 1930s.

It’s understood the building was formerly made up of apartments, which the Shaw family slowly accumulated, later turning it into one main residence.

PropTrack research shows South Yarra’s median house price is $2.156m — more than $37m less than the bottom end of the abode’s price hopes.

Inside, there are five lift-connected levels which lead to a rooftop with a swimming pool, barbecue and views of Melbourne city.

The kitchen is fitted with Miele and Gaggenau appliances, Calacatta marble surfaces, integrated Liebherr refrigeration and a large scullery.

Other features of the South Yarra pad are the gym, temperature-controlled wine cellar, infra-red sauna, steam room, laundry, home theatre and a 12-car garage.

The listing comes a year after the property was at the centre of construction disaster when a crane toppled over and crushed part of a neighbouring apartment block.

The Herald Sun reported the incident has left one unit “uninhabitable,” and others damaged to this day, a nearby resident said, with those from the apartment block infuriated that the $40m-plus mansion is now up for sale while their homes are still in need of repair.

Neighbours are also enraged that the crane operator — who is understood to have been seen on their phone moments before the incident — is yet to be prosecuted, the newspaper reported.

Expressions of interest close for the contentious South Yarra property on Monday, March 24 at 3pm.
