Strict water restrictions could return as Burdekin River rises near Charters Towers

An emergency alert has been issued for Charters Towers as the Burdekin River begins to rise, with water restrictions expected to return.

An emergency alert has been issued for Charters Towers as the Burdekin River begins to rise.

Residents and businesses have been warned to prepare for level 5 water restrictions.

In February, the town spent some time isolated and on strict water restrictions due to an issue with the central intake valve.

The Burdekin River at Sellheim is rising, but the water is still below minor flood levels.

In February, rapidly rising floodwaters brought debris down river and clopped up and damaged the intake valve.

The community were praised for their efforts to conserve water.

“Everyone jumped on board and did it, and I understand it was not easy for those with kids,” Deputy Mayor Kate Hastie said.
