North Queensland has been hit with a burst of cold weather, with residents waking up to cooler temperatures.

Locals made the most of the welcome change, enjoying walks along the Strand on Wednesday morning.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said this week has seen the coolest mornings since May 2024.

“The coolest for May since last year,” he said.

“It’s the first really cool spur we’ve seen for Townsville this year.”

Mr Hanniffy said the cold mornings are a result of the ongoing rain in NSW.

“It’s caused by a drier southerly airflow that pushed up through much of interior Queensland, and that also pushed out to parts of the north east tropical coast,” he said.

“This was driven up by a combination of the high pressure system in the Bite, and also a low pressure system near the NSW coast.”

On Wednesday morning, temperatures dropped to a chilly 13 degrees, with a minimum of 18 expected on Thursday, 19 degrees on Friday and 20 degrees on Saturday.

Charters Towers is predicted to receive the coldest conditions, with temperatures reaching a minimum of 13 degrees on Thursday, 14 degrees on Friday and 16 degrees on Saturday.

Mr Hanniffy said light winds are also expected across North Queensland for the rest of the week, adding to the cool conditions.

“The chance of fog will be a feature during the early mornings over the next few days,” he said.
