A 28-year-old Mornington Island man allegedly tried to break free from custody in dramatic fashion, jumping out of a police van and making a run for it at the airport.
Police allege the man jumped out of the parked van while waiting to be transported with other prisoners at Mount Isa Airport around 7.20am on Thursday.
He ran a short distance before officers quickly apprehended him and returned him to custody.
Mount Isa Superintendent Thomas Armitt said there was no risk to public safety during the incident, commending the swift response by police and airport security teams.
“Police acted quickly to cordon off the area around the airport and were supported by airport security teams,” he said.
“The offender was brought back into custody swiftly and has been charged.
“I will be working with local officers to review the incident.”
The man has been charged with one count of escape unlawful custody and is due to appear in the Mount Isa Magistrates Court today, January 23.
