Garbutt man Lau Juel Hansen charged with child abuse material offences in court for breaching bail
A Garbutt man on Supreme Court bail for 50+ charges relating to distributing, making or possession child abuse material has been pictured for the first time as he was sentenced for breaching a reporting condition.

A man who is on bail after police charged him with being the ‘administrator’ of child abuse networks has appeared in court for breaching a condition of his Supreme Court bail undertaking.
Lau Juel Hansen faces 59 offences in relation to either distributing, making or possessing child abuse material, which was allegedly uncovered during a police search of his Garbutt home in February 2023.
Hansen, who was 71 at the time of being charged, was granted bail by the Townsville Supreme Court on February 22, 2023 with a condition that he reports to the Townsville City Police Station every Tuesday and Friday between the hours of 8am and 4pm.
He appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday morning, with the court being told that on April 21 in 2023 he arrived an hour and a half late to report.
“The defendant advised that morning he had been to church and went home to sleep at lunch time,” police prosecutor Sam Stewart said.
“The defendant advised he attended an appointment at his doctor’s at 2.30pm that lasted approximately 35 to 45 minutes, after which he felt unwell and went home.”
Defence lawyer Michael Spearman who appeared on the man’s behalf said it was a “low level” breach as his client did appear at the station and explained why he was late.
“He’s been on bail for some time, you could convict and not further punish,” he said.
Magistrate Lee said she acknowledged the man’s criminal history and that he had not been charged with breaching a bail undertaking previously.
Hansen pleaded guilty to breaching a bail condition.
He was convicted and not further punished, no convictions were recorded.
