Paramedics were called to the courthouse after a man dropped to the ground voicing concerns for his heart, as he was being sentenced to jail for more than 20 drug, theft and property crimes.

Corey Dale Geesu, the boyfriend of Annmarie Walters who had her arm bitten off by her dog, dropped from his chair to the ground groaning about his heart in the middle of sentencing.

Before the medical episode, Geesu had asked for his charges to be transferred to Murri Court, but Magistrate Cathy McLennan rejected the request, saying the sentence wouldn’t change.

Geesu, who kept leaning over to his lawyer, then asked if Her Honour would adjourn the sentence for a second time so he could “make arrangements” for someone to look after his partner, as he had been heavily involved in her care since her arm was amputated.

This was also rejected.

Magistrate McLennan acknowledged the difficulties his partner faced, however sentenced him to jail with an immediate parole eligibility date.

“The reality is I simply can’t overlook your offending continued over and over and over again, you’ve been stopped and charged, it occurred over a six to eight month period despite you being on parole, charged and arrested,” she said.

“It will be some time before (parole) comes through, so you’ll be remanded in custody today.”

Geesu then dropped from his chair to the ground moaning, and his lawyer called for medical help.

Ms Walters, who was supporting him in court, said he had a heart condition before coming to his aid, as an ambulance was called and court was adjourned.

Prior to the medical episode, police prosecutor Danny Burke outlined some of the worst of the man’s offending which included the possession of 3.7g of methamphetamine, followed by a theft that occurred less than a week after his girlfriend was attacked by her dog.

The court was told Geesu stole an electric scooter from the Townsville University Hospital on October 17 last year and on November 29 he entered a Belgian Gardens address asking a woman to use her mobile.

When she declined, he stole her phone valued at $200 and a $280 speaker, Mr Burke said.

The man with a 21-page criminal history had been charged with four disqualified driving offences in the last five years.

Defence lawyer Ken Robinson had said Geesu grew up on Palm Island and had a “problematic history” with drugs.

“He’s supported by Annmarie who had medical issues, she’s had an arm amputated. Geesu is very heavily involved in her care currently and she’s supporting him and wants him to stay in the community with her,” the lawyer said.

Geesu pleaded guilty to 22 offences which included enter a dwelling to commit, stealing a vehicle, possessing drugs, wilful damage, obstruct police and driving disqualified and uninsured.

He was sentenced to 15 months jail with an immediate parole eligibility date, which meant he was taken to the hospital for assessment before going to the Townsville watch house.
