With a feisty princess, an annoying and wisecracking donkey, a love-struck dragon and an unlikely hero, Shrek the Musical JR is shrieking its way to the Townsville Civic Theatre Stage this week.
Filled with much-loved characters, the Broadway Academy Townsville production is directed by Carla Lejarraga who said the musical featured two casts with 120 performers in fantastic costumes.
“We have two of everything - two Shreks, two donkeys and two dragons. We’re really lucky, because all of these students also come here to Broadway to do their training have their opportunity to have a go on the big stage, which is really exciting, because that Civic Theatre is incredible,” Mrs Lejarraga said.
“There amazing props and an amazing set and we’re trying to give them (students) the most professional experience that they can get.
“What we want to do is give as many children an opportunity to shine as possible. It means that twice as many children get to be a role and twice as many children get to have a go,” she said.
She said the academy decided to do the musical because its message was about being true to yourself.
“Shrek, of course, himself, is an outcast, and he pretends he doesn’t care, but at the end of the day, he really just wants to belong. The whole message around Shrek is, let your freak flag fly, which is just be yourself and love who you are, which is great,” she said.
Shrek the Musical Jr is on at the Townsville Civic Theatre on this Wednesday and Thursday with two evening show each night.
