When she heard about the Australia Day Aussie Fun Run on the Strand Amy Savage couldn’t wait to lace up her running shoes to take part.
The 5km fun run is just one of a host of Australia Day activities at Jezzine Barracks and along the Strand.
“I hadn’t heard about the Australia Day fun run here in Townsville before but I thought it was a great opportunity to get up and go for a run with like-minded people and get Australia Day off to a good start,” she said.
“I always participate in the Townsville Running Festival each year and other running festivals around the region but haven’t participated any fun runs. So I’m really looking forward to doing the first one here in Townsville.
“We have beautiful weather here in Australia, and it’s probably a great way to kick off Australia Day and pay tribute to the nice outdoor or outdoor weather we have.
“If I’m going to have a pie and or a sausage roll in true Aussies style during the day, it’s a good way to do some damage control.”
The 5km Aussie Fun Run is on at Jezzine Barracks from 6am to 8am with prizes for best dressed followed by the free Aussie Breakfast at 8am.
Australia Day formalities begin at the barracks at 9am with the flag raising ceremony, followed by the Australia Day Awards ceremony and the citizenship ceremony.
Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said this Australia Day had different meanings for individual Townsville residents and visitors.
“Australia Day is a day that means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, which is why Council is encouraging all residents to reflect, respect and celebrate in your own way this year,” Cr Greaney said.
“We’re starting Australia Day at Jezzine Barracks with the Aussie Fun Run, which is a great way to start the day off. The run costs a gold coin donation to enter, with all proceeds going to Brighter Lives Townsville Hospital Foundation to help brighten the lives of patients at Townsville Hospital.
“We will also have our Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony with a Royal Guard of Honour, the raising of the flag and a 21 gun salute.
“Our Australia Day Awards Ceremony will follow, recognising the outstanding commitments made by Townsville residents to our wonderful community.
A total of 50 new citizens will be welcomed into the community.
Townsville’s Big Eye Theatre will be hosting Kunbul Survival Day from 5.30am on Australia Day at Strand Park.
