After 795 days, a five-year-old Toowoomba girl has finished her cancer treatment.
It’s a day her family had dreamt of for so long, and it has finally arrived with Haylen Ernst living cancer-free, as of late last month.
The young girl was diagnosed with leukaemia at just three years old, and her parents Tiffany and Karl, along with her two older siblings, had been living every family’s nightmare for the past two years.
Treatment began immediately after the diagnosis at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, and they were offered a unit free-of-charge at a Leukaemia Foundation Patient Accommodation Village.
Haylen’s intensive treatment caused her to have high temperatures, mouth ulcers and mucositis.
She returned home in July 2019, but their life was still far from normal with Haylen needing to travel back to Brisbane every 12 weeks for maintenance treatment, with a telehealth consultation every six weeks and blood tests at their local hospital every fortnight.
But now, her family has announced that Haylen is no longer battling cancer.
Mr and Mrs Ernst, who own XFactor Plumbing, shared the happy news with their Facebook followers.
“Haylen, sweetheart, you have been such a brave and strong little girl through your whole cancer treatment,” it read.
“You have never complained about it and always just taken it in your stride.
“You have been on chemo for 795 days, had numerous blood tests, not to mention all the times you have been put to sleep to have chemo intrathecally and the list goes on.
“You, our darling, are our hero.
“You wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for your amazing oncologist Dr Morag we will be forever grateful to her for giving us our daughter back.
“Haylen go and follow your dreams baby girl, as now you’re cancer free.”
