Yellow Brick comes second in Magic Millions Guineas after massive run

Toowoomba-trained Yellow Brick was the picked favourite at Thursday’s Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, but an early distraction proved detrimental for the three-year-old gelding.

'Great week' for Magic Millions with ‘record-breaking sales’

Toowoomba rocket Yellow Brick was prized to take out the top spot in Thursday’s Magic Million 3YO Guineas, however an early distraction proved the difference between a nose-length win.

Trainer Maddy Sears, who works with her father Tony, said it was not a surprise when the three-year-old horse was named a clear favourite for the $2 million, 1425m run.

After winning the inaugural King of the Mountain on New Year's Eve at Clifford Park, and breaking the track record, Ms Sears said there was a lot of excitement to compete in one of Australia’s major racing events.

However in the last stretch, Yellow Brick, piloted by hoop Ben Thompson, would place second behind Fashion Legend.

“It was a bit nerve-racking when he first jumped, because he wasn’t fast away like he normally is,” Ms Sears said.

According to Ms Sears, Yellow Brick may have become a bit distracted and had a loss of concentration after a horse beside him was acting up before the jump.

“If he got clear running when he probably should have and wasn’t getting pinballed between two horses … I think the result would have been quite different,” the 25-year-old trainer said.

“But (Fashion Legend) is a good horse, and he had a good run up the straight, whereas we had to duck and dive. It was an absolutely massive run.”

Coming second in a short margin, Ms Sears said they were not disappointed by the efforts.

“It was bittersweet to get beaten by such a short margin … so close but so far,” she said.

“It was a tremendous run though, and we’re extremely proud of what he’s done.”

Ms Sears said Yellow Brick will now take a well-earned four to six week break in the paddocks before Ms Sears and her father decide on a plan.

A possible option is for Yellow Brick to compete in the upcoming Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm Racecourse at the end of May.
