Weetwood organisers are confident Toowoomba’s “biggest social event of the year” can get even bigger, after a massive crowd packed out Clifford Park at the weekend.
Thousands filled every part of the venue on Saturday afternoon for the Audi Centre Toowoomba Weetwood — a celebration of racing, music, food and frivolity.
While final numbers aren’t clear yet, Toowoomba Turf Club chairman Jason Ward said the move to a September date four years ago was clearly paying off.
“It's spring, everyone is dying to get out and see the flowers and come to Weetwood,” Mr Ward said.
“It will continue to grow more as we get more engagement with local government.
“We could have a second function room (for corporate sponsors) and it would fill like that.
“Our Bird Cage (area) sold out in six minutes, that’s for 150 people.”
Toowoomba Turf Club CEO Lizzy King said Clifford Park was on its way to earning a reputation rivalling some of Australia’s best racecourses.
“It’s about consistently putting on good events – you give them a great experience, they come back,” she said.
“Especially on days like this, where it’s the social event of the year, these people come each year and get photos with their friends and catch up.
“It’s people from out west and from Brisbane – it’s beautiful to see everyone getting together.
“The calibre of horses we’re seeing nominated for black tie racing is getting better every year.”
