A senior Toowoomba rugby league game has been sensationally cancelled by officials after an ugly brawl erupted and led to altercations between the crowd and players.

After a tense and at times fiery first half tensions boiled over between Valleys Roosters and Oakey Bears in the second stanza of the TRL A-Grade fixture on Sunday.

A longtime TRL supporter described ‘ugly’ scenes during the game at Valleys’ John McDonald Sports Complex, with players involved in scuffles on the field before some reportedly turned their attention to supporters.

“There was a fair bit of push and shove in the first half and Oakey looked a bit firey,” the spectator said.

“It all happened in the second half though.

“One Valleys player copped a few punches to the head and after that it looked like an Oakey player got sent off and another went to the sin bin.

“Oakey just lost the plot.

“After that they (Oakey players) were at the crowd, their players ran off the field and were abusing people in the crowd and it looked like they wanted to fight them as well.

“It was really ugly stuff – not a good look for the game at all.

“It’s just not on. When you’re at the footy and people you know are being verbally abused and called all sorts of names it’s not right.

“There’s no place for that.”

The TRL brawl happened on the same week a teenager was hospitalised by a late hit in Cairns.

The Mareeba teenager faces an uncertain future after what was described by one long-serving rugby league official as a “disgraceful dog shot” that left the Gladiators playmaker in hospital.

Toowoomba Rugby League chairman Joe Hannant said they are aware of the incident and an investigation is already underway.

“We are aware of an incident involving the Valleys and Oakey clubs,” Hannant said.

“We’re gathering the exact details but the game was called off early due to issues off the field.

“In line with our legislation and procedures we are trying to collect as much information as possible to get to the bottom of what happened.

“That process began yesterday (Sunday) afternoon and continued last night as well.

“We take these matters very seriously, there is no place for any type of bad behaviour in our game, and depending on the outcome of that investigation we will issue punishments accordingly.”
