More than 200 first year University of Southern Queensland students will benefit from over $1 million in scholarships thanks to the Tertiary Access Payment scheme.
Students who are in the process of planning to move more than 90 minutes away from their hometown to make a USQ campus their new base this year are eligible to apply for a $5,000 TAP scholarship.
Through the TAP scheme, $1,030,000 in scholarships has been allocated to USQ to assist 206 full- time first year students make the move from outer regional and remote locations to study at one of its three campuses in Toowoomba, Springfield or Ipswich.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie said the TAP scheme had been developed to strengthen tertiary education in regional and remote Australia, and was a one-off, means tested payment of $5,000 per student.
“This is an incredible opportunity that could mean the difference between starting university immediately after school or having to take a gap year to save some extra money,” Professor Mackenzie said.
“While we know that $5,000 will not cover all costs, it is an amount that will definitely lessen the financial and emotional burden for many students and their families.
“Combined with our Residential College scholarships which guarantee all students living at our residential colleges receive financial support, this scheme will help provide greater certainty for first year students embarking on university life.”
The TAP is expected to contribute to the Government’s Closing the Gap targets, by improving participation rates of indigenous students from outer regional and remote areas through providing improved financial support for further study.
To be eligible, a student must relocate to a tertiary institution more than 90 minutes from their home by public transport to undertake full-time study.
