University of Southern Queensland draws on other channels after page blocked

The team at the University of Southern Queensland has been ‘taken aback’ after their Facebook page was blocked admist the platform’s media blitz.

Facebook bars Aussies from sharing or viewing news

The University of Southern Queensland Facebook page remains blocked, seemingly by accident, as the site continues to purge news content from its platform.

USQ executive director, marketing, media and communications Kirsten MacGregor said the team were “taken aback” by Facebook’s actions.

“Our Facebook account is a rich source of great stories about our expertise, our student life, and the research with impact that’s under way at the University of Southern Queensland,” Ms MacGregor said.

“But most of this content is produced by the talented storytellers and video producers in our USQ team.

“They may have the instincts of news journalists, but we are not a news organisation, so we’re somewhat taken aback by today’s events.

“In the meantime, we’ll keep the great content coming on our other social accounts.”

USQ is not the only non-news outlet to be caught up in the fray.

The Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland Health, The Betoota Advocate and Facebook’s own page were some of the others that were inexplicably blocked this morning. They have since reappeared.
