Residents near a proposed workers camp at Turallin are making submissions to the co-ordinator general through the draft EIS process.

Residents of the locality of Turallin are making submissions to the Co-ordinator General outlining their concerns over a proposed 300 bed workers camp that would be part of the Inland Rail project.

Included in the draft Inland Rail Border to Gowrie Environmental Impact Statement that is out for public consultation until May 4 are plans for three “nonresident workforce accommodations” to cater for the project’s construction workforce.

Each accommodation will be required to hold 300 staff during the peak construction period, and approximately 150 people per camp outside that time.

According to the draft EIS, there will be a camp located at 553 Turallin Road, Turallin, another on the Cunningham Highway at Yelarbon, and a third on the Millmerran-Inglewood Road at Inglewood.

The Turallin camp would be located 6.5km northwest of Millmerran on a 205,000 sq m site, with access from Ellerslie Road.

Some residents are upset about what they said was a lack of consultation and awareness about the proposal at Turallin.

They say it would have a drastic effect on the amenity and lifestyle to which locals are accustomed, and are encouraging people to make submissions on the EIS before the opportunity is lost.

Among their concerns are the impact of increased traffic on a narrow road that is already heavily traversed by domestic and commercial traffic, including a school bus, the lack of essential services on location compared to those that are available in Millmerran, and potential flooding issues on the site.

Residents also say the legacy of post-accommodation infrastructure would be more beneficial to the wider community if the camp was located in Millmerran.
