A Toowoomba snake catcher has captured a large “dangerously venomous” blue bellied black snake after a callout to an Oakey home.
Gunter Glaser of Darling Downs Snakes Catchers 24/7 captured and relocated the snake last week after it was found slithering around the bottom storey of a family home.
The reptile was 1.5m in length and Mr Glaser said that was as big as they came.
“These snakes are dangerous but people don’t die from blue bellied black bites, the main issue is that they can cause internal damage,” he said.
“They are most common west of Toowoomba in the drier areas while I find red bellied black snakes in the damper areas in town.
“I got the call from the homeowners who had just moved into the house after it had been vacant for 10 years.
“The snakes would have loved to come and go from this place in the past.”
He said while the snake was large and heavy, blue bellied blacks were easier to catch then some other species such as the king brown snake.
“Browns are jumpy and you have to be on your toes but these guys are a bit more placid,” he said.
“After I place them in a bag I relocate them in a new environment where I know they’ll survive.”
Mr Glaser said while he was still getting six to seven callouts a week, it was far fewer than this time last year.
“I am reasonably busy but nothing like last year where I was relocating multiple snakes a day,” he said.
“The climate is much the same so the only thing I can think of that’s different is the mouse plague. The snakes are coming across more food so they don’t need to make their way into houses to find something to eat.”
If residents come across a snake in their home Mr Glaser recommends trying to contain it to one room, closing the door and placing a towel on the floor so it can’t slither away.
