The Toowoomba Chamber hopes to give new life to the CBD and increase foot traffic.
Consultation undertaken by the CBD Revitalisation Advisory Committee found those surveyed – which included retail, industry, hospitality, accommodation and professional services sectors – all saw the need to increase foot traffic in the CBD, to promote the CBD as a destination, and the need for investment and renewal of public assets.
The Chronicle asked its readers what their thoughts were on the revitalisation of the CBD, and an overwhelming number of those that replied said it was needed.
Many also gave their suggestions on how the CBD could become more appealing to residents and visitors.
Ideas included the ever-popular suggestion of increased limits on parking, easier access to public transport, a fountain in the city centre and more green space for community events.
Terry Crouther said: “We need to overhaul our public transport, with more direct and express services to and from the CBD to outer suburbs, more bus stops in key locations in the CBD to connect with the new laneways, footpaths and parks. We need more green space for community events and relaxation, more inner-city living and visitor accommodation, and more multi-level parking in key locations and remove centre on street parking.”
Brooke Hilton said: “They need to put the hours up on the parking. One hour isn’t long enough especially if you’re having a meal.”
Alicia Fitzpatrick said: “Free parking for set periods would be amazing.”
Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce CEO Todd Rohl said the outcomes being sought by the chamber are all about investing in people’s CBD experience and incentivising small business, thus supporting business growth.
