The owners of a house in Toowoomba’s southern suburbs have been left to pick up the pieces after their home was gutted by flames.

Crews rushed to put out the fire on Stumm Street in Kearneys Spring, which was alerted to emergency services after 10am.

Toowoomba station officer Shane Rankine said the first teams arrived to find flames shooting out of the front windows of the house.

He said the owners were not at home at the time and arrived a short time later.

“Upon arrival, crews noticed flames emitting from the front windows of the house and this house has sustained heavy smoke and structural damage,” Mr Rankine said.

“Initial reports to fire services were that persons were unaccounted for, so crews entered the structure to ascertain occupancy, and it was a relief that all persons were accounted for and weren’t at home.

“The young son of the owners was worried about the border collie and that dog was located in the backyard.

“The occupants are very lucky that they were not at home when the fire occurred.”

Mr Rankine said police and fire investigators will now explore the cause of the blaze.

He said early detection from members of the public helped prevent further damage.
