Toowoomba residents gathered at Queens Park last week to raise funds for cord blood research.
The Inner Wheel Club of Toowoomba group arranged the walk in line with the organisation’s national project Sean’s Two for Ten.
Sean’s Two for Ten is a two kilometre walk where participants pay $10 to register with all funds going towards cord blood research.
Worldwide, cord blood which is taken from a baby’s umbilical cord straight after it’s born has been used in over 40,000 transplants in the treatment of more than 80 conditions.
In Australia, more than 500 cord blood units have been released to treat many conditions here and overseas.
Cord blood is a particularly rich source of haematopoietic stem cells, which have the ability to create and heal organs, blood and the immune system.
Inner Wheel Club of Toowoomba cord blood representative Reinhild Oberman said it was an important cause to support.
“The stem cells in the umbilical cord and brilliant, they help so many with diseases such as leukaemia, other blood disorders, heart disease and cancers,” she said.
“It’s wonderful to be able to help those in need.”
