In the same week Protea Place signalled its intent to pressure the State Government for funding – a community group shaping generations of young men and women has rallied behind the not-for-profit.
Toowoomba Bears Rugby Union Club held its annual Ladies Day on Saturday with proceeds donated once again to Protea Place.
“Rallying behind and supporting organisations like Protea Place is very important to us,” Bears club president Bruce McConnel said.
“It’s very disappointing that despite the best efforts, despite the increased awareness, that incidents of domestic violence continue to rise.
“As a club we want to confront this issue, and being able to support organisations like Protea Place is something we are proud of.
“It’s unfortunate that we need organisations like them, but the work they do to support women in need is important.”
While funds raised from the club’s special event are donated directly to the Toowoomba based service, Bears’ support of Protea Place is not restricted solely to Ladies Day.
With a massive cross-section of teen, senior, male and female players, supporters and volunteers part of the club, McConnel said they could have a positive influence on countless people.
“Everyone of us can play a part in addressing and stopping domestic violence,” McConnel said.
“It’s about the conversations we have, educating ourselves and each other, supporting those in need and making better decisions.
“We have a broad cross section of people at our club – young boys and girls, senior male and female players, volunteers and supporters.
“We only have them for a few hours each week, but we can do a lot in that time.
“In the past our male players have visited Protea Place and been shown what they do.
“In the week leading up to Ladies Day we have guest speakers in for special sessions.
“When we educate and support our members they can be more aware, make better decisions and go out into other communities and be a positive influence there as well.”
