While many Toowoomba businesses struggle to stay afloat, one mum of five has taken a leap of faith after finding a prominent gap in the market.

For most of Amy Thomas’ life, horses have been close to her heart, and after a workplace hiatus to raise a family she officially unveiled The Horse Den at the weekend.

Mrs Thomas said her dream came to life after stepping back into the work environment and seeing a lack of availability for equestrian lovers.

“I wanted The Horse Den to be the place to be … its an experience instead of just a store,” she said.

“I wanted to create a space that was comfortable and familiar. I wanted to instil the vision of using these products within your own environment.”

Mrs Thomas installed a makeshift stable, fake grass, a fire pit and couches within the site to allow guests to relax while browsing for products.

“I didn’t just want a whole bunch of racks with clothes hanging off them,” she said.

“There’s a strong Australian presence, but we’ve also branched out to have dog products, home wares and more available.”

Mrs Thomas pushed for clients to have access to high quality, ‘luxury’ items from Europe, with customers previously forced to take a chance with online ordering.

“We have a nice clothing range from Germany, but no one has really gotten to understand the quality and the difference,” she said.

“Having the touchability before you make the leap … its opened up a whole other world for (shoppers).

The Horse Den on Railway Street is now open seven days a week.
