In a tearful outburst a Loganlea mother told a Toowoomba court how young mothers are landing in jail for accommodation and housing.

Loganlea mother Tasi Joy Seckhold appeared in custody via videolink at Toowoomba Magistrates Court on February 19 and pleaded guilty to one charge of stealing and one charge of possessing drug utensils.

The court heard how she was charged for stealing almost $40 of food with a co-offender from EuroGararage (EG Fuels) on Ruthven Street at 6.30am on November 10, 2023.

The incident was caught on CCTV as the 27-year-old mother stashed seven items within her clothes, and when she tried to walk out the door, the security confronted them and they ran away, police prosecutor sergeant Tim Hutton said.

The court heard how Seckhold, who was visiting her sister in Toowoomba and had an ongoing drug issue, was “very motivated” to avoid jail time, co-operating with police and giving frank admissions over the pipe they found on her when they arrested her at Harlaxton on Sunday.

As Magistrate Mark Howden was about to pass his sentence, Seckhold made a tearful plea to the court.

“You know we try, we try, we did not grow up with a mother, we grew up in the system and you never gave us a chance,” she said.

“You know why so many young mums are in jail for?

“It’s for accommodation and housing.

“How are you going to help us when we have disabilities and we have no one to look after us.”

Seckhold was sentenced to one month imprisonment with the parole eligibility date of February 19, 2024.
