Russell Street reopens to traffic following Toowoomba Regional Council revamp

After months of work upgrading a busy CBD street, residents and motorists will soon get the chance to take a look at the revamped Russell Street.

A major Toowoomba CBD street will soon be reopened following months of upgrade works.

Motorists will be welcomed onto the second stage of the revamped Russell Street from noon of November 25.

The Ruthven to Neil streets section of the upgrade work features new pavement and footpaths, lighting and CCTV as well as pedestrian crossing points, public art and street furniture.

“I’d like to thank the businesses on Russell Street for their co-operation and patience as Council carried out this important project,” Toowoomba Regional Council Infrastructure Committee chair Carol Taylor said.

“While major civil works are now complete, crews will remain on site to undertake final works including artwork, landscaping and streetscape works and general clean-up of the site.”

Traffic is now fully open on Russell Street following extensive roadworks.

With $2 million of funding for the project coming from the state government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program, Local Government Assistant Minister Nikki Boyd said she was pleased to see the project come to fruition.

“Russell Street is one of Toowoomba’s most important iconic destinations, and these upgrades will enhance the already great lifestyle, allowing tourists and locals alike to enjoy this space, giving the local economy a shot in the arm.

“Through the program, Toowoomba Regional Council has been allocated more than $9.1 million to help deliver five community infrastructure projects.

“These projects have already supported or created 69 good, local jobs, with more to come, which is great news for local businesses, local tradies and local families.”
