The revamped Russell Street is officially back open for business.
Residents and motorists can now use the road unimpeded, with the section between Victoria and Ruthven Streets reopening to traffic on Friday.
Councillor Carol Taylor said she was excited to see traffic flowing through the street once again.
“It’s pleasing we’ve been able to mark a major milestone in this project which will help transform one of the city’s oldest and most iconic streets into a vibrant people-friendly destination,” Ms Taylor said.
“While major civil works are now complete, crews will remain on site to undertake final works including final landscaping and streetscape works and general clean-up of the site.”
The council will celebrate the reopening once final works are complete on November 20.
“We know businesses have been impacted by the closure to traffic and this is a way for us to thank them for their ongoing co-operation and patience during construction. It’s also a great chance for the community to celebrate the street being reopened,” Ms Taylor said.
“There will be a host of free activities to take part-in, plus some incredible music from local artists. We encourage everyone to come down and enjoy this free event.”
With the street now reopened, paid parking will again commence in Russell Street.
Stage two of the project, upgrading Russell Street from Ruthven to Neil Streets, is expected to take place from February to late 2022.
