Toowoomba residents have reacted with sadness at the news a popular obstetrician has moved away from the city.

Doctor Zakia Sharif has swapped the Garden City for the Apple Isle, relocating to Tasmania on short notice.

Dr Sharif, who moved to Australia from Iraq in 1999 and had worked in two hospitals in Toowoomba since 2013, cited a health issue and professional pressures as the reasons for her departure.

The news shocked several Chronicle readers, who said Dr Sharif had always been caring and compassionate to her patients.

“Such an amazing caring doctor — she has been wonderful with my daughter, she always went above and beyond for her,” Wendy Bauer wrote.

Toowoomba has lost a great OB/GYNO. I know I will definitely miss her and will never find another woman’s doctor as caring and understanding,” Sally Rollo added.

Other residents wished Dr Sharif well on her new adventures in Tasmania.

“Have a wonderful time in Tasmania Zakia. You are the most wonderful, caring doctor and you give the best hugs,” Anita Sullivan wrote.

“I wish you all the best in your next adventure in your life and every happiness,” Clare-Maree O’Brien said.
