Widespread rain is expected across the Toowoomba region today, with thunderstorms and strong winds also forecast.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Toowoomba could receive up to 20mm.

A majority of the rainfall will be in the morning and early afternoon with a thunderstorm brewing as the morning continues.

Rain has already been falling overnight, with residents waking up to dreary skies and heavy fog.

The rain is forecast to begin clearing in the evening with winds picking up to 35kmh.

Today is the only day this week when wet weather is expected. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny but winds will further pick up to 40kmh.

The lack of cloud cover will also mean a chilly day with temperatures ranging from 6 to 13 degrees, however with the wind chill factor the apparent temperature is expected to be much lower.

On Sunday winds will ease slightly with 4 to 16 degrees predicted.

The beginning of the working week will follow a similar fashion with 4 degrees expected as the minimum until Wednesday, with maximums in the mid to high teens.

The wet weather is being caused by a high in the Tasman Sea which is extending a weak ridge of high pressure along the east Queensland coast.

A trough over western parts will sweep eastwards across the state this morning, moving off the southeast coast late in the day.

A ridge of high pressure and cooler, drier conditions will then spread across much of the state in the wake of the trough, with fresh and gusty west to south-westerly winds to follow.
