The names of two Toowoomba women allegedly killed by their partners have been read out in the Queensland parliament.

Flanked by Toowoomba North MP Trevor Watts, Queensland Treasurer David Janetzki said the community stood with the families of Louise Griffiths and Frances Crawford.

“I want to reflect on two women who have lost their lives, who have been taken from their families, their friends and our community over the last few months,” he said.

“Louise and Frances.

“Their names, must be heard and their memory must be preserved.”

Louise Griffiths was allegedly killed by her husband at their Geham home on April 15, while Frances Crawford was allegedly killed by her estranged husband Robert Crawford at their Upper Lockyer home on June 30 last year.

Both men have been charged with murder but have not entered pleas.

Mr Janetzki told the parliament the deaths rocked the Toowoomba community, in part because there was few to no official recorded instances of domestic violence between the parties.

Mr Janetzki spoke on the outpouring of grief at the vigil held in Toowoomba last week, at Louise’s funeral at Humeridge Church.

“It brought the community together and it reminded us of how small our community is and the loss of women like Louise and Frances and the impact it makes.

“My wife and I spoke with Louise just a couple of months ago at her nephew’s seventh birthday party, a moment of high excitement as only 20 seven-year-old boys can bring to a moment.

“My wife and I went to school with Frances.

“In a small, close-knit community like Toowoomba, in the Toowoomba region, everybody is impacted by the loss of women.”

The parliament heard domestic violence is at an all-time high in Toowoomba with the local Magistrates Court finalising 1371 Domestic Violence Protection Order breaches in the current financial year.

Over the same period, 398 domestic violence-related assault, stalking, wilful damage charges were finalised.

“The scourge of domestic violence must end,” Mr Janetzki said.

“Men must do more to stop it and speak against it. Our community has suffered a great deal.

“To the Pilon family and to the Griffiths family, know that our community grieves with you.”
