He’s barely a teenager, but Daniel Wittmaack already has dreams of joining the Queensland Police Service.
The 13-year-old is already a Police Citizen Youth Club Cadet, and is hoping to draw more youngsters his age to the program.
“He’s been begging me to join the cadets and as soon as he was 12 he was straight in there,” mum Morgan Wittmaack said.
“It helps him with camaraderie and having a team where they’re all working together and gets him interacting with the community as he would as a police officer.”
Residents like the Wittmaack family got a rare glimpse into the incredible work of police at a Community Safety and Career Expo on Saturday.
Regional recruiting officer Katie McDougall said they had a great turnout in the morning despite the unfortunate weather.
“The point of this is to obviously get the word out about police recruiting and all of the opportunities we have, but it’s also about community safety,” she said.
“To inform people of different crime prevention measures.”
Ms McDougall said the QPS often saw an uptick in applications during natural disasters.
“People want to make a difference and help out so since the cyclone and the floods we have had a fair bit of interest,” she said.
“It’s a very rewarding career so people are interested in helping the community and doing something worthwhile.”
