Police disappointed after speeders pinged in Toowoomba school zones

Despite a heavy police presence, officers are concerned about the high rate of speeding offences detected as students return to the classroom after long summer break.

Toowoomba police will be out in force at Toowoomba’s school zone as the holiday’s end.

TOOWOOMBA police are disappointed at the high number of traffic offences detected in school zones as the summer holidays end.

Five motorists were booked for mid-range speeding in the Darling Downs yesterday morning, while three were booked for low-range speeding.

Police clocked one motorist doing more than 20km/h over the limit and another was pinged for using a mobile phone while driving.

Darling Downs Road Policing Unit Senior Sergeant Kim Hill said it was disappointing to record speed detections in school zones.

“People need to get their heads back in the space that we have kids at school,” she said.

“Children don’t see the world the way as we do … that is why we have 40km/h zones; they give you time to stop for the unexpected.”

Sgt Hill said there would be a heavy police presence at the district’s school zones.

Drivers are urged to slow down, drive to the conditions and keep an eye out for wayward students who are still learning the road rules.

Additionally, police have urged motorists to be mindful of students walking and riding to school.

Police suggest parents take extra steps to ensure students know where and when to cross the road safely.
