An obscure Facebook post from Krystina Jones went viral in Toowoomba when, with her eight-year-old daughter, she went out in search of a missing silver bangle, a precious piece of jewellery of sentimental value to the family.
Born in Toowoomba but now a Brisbane resident, Mrs Jones dreamt of taking her daughter Lilli to the infamous Toowoomba Show where she had made many happy memories growing up.
But what was supposed to be a fun day two weeks ago turned sour when a silver bangle that had belonged to Lilli since she was a baby accidentally floated away with a helium balloon, and hasn’t been seen since.
Mrs Jones said she placed the bangle and balloon in her pocket when Lilli went to play some games at Sideshow Alley when she noticed the accessory slipped away from her, and began to float off.
“At first I was just kind of speechless,” Mrs Jones said.
“ I just thought, ‘far out what can I do’?”
“Lilli was obviously very upset and angry.
“We sort of just went and sat on the hill thinking and hoping how I could get it back.
“Lilly was upset too because people were looking at her going ‘it’s just a balloon’ but it wasn’t just a balloon.”
Mrs Jones took to social media to spread the word of the missing bangle with the post going viral in the Toowoomba Community Facebook group, shared almost 2000 times.
One false alarm of a balloon falling into a resident’s backyard gave the family an ounce of hope, but as time has passed Mrs Jones said she understands the likelihood of finding the bracelet is becoming slim.
“I had to try something and you never know,” she said.
“When I posted on Facebook it was nice to see lots of people shared it and I think I only received two negative comments.
“I’m already beating myself up over it because it could have been avoided.”
If the bangle can’t be located Lilli has been promised a replacement, but her mum says she has her heart set on recovering the original one.
“We’ve asked her if she wants another one and she’s still wants that one back so she’s still deciding whether to do that.”
