Oakey Aquatic Centre to be upgraded by Toowoomba Regional Council for disability access

A small town’s pool and aquatic centre will be upgraded by the council this winter to improve access for people with disabilities.

Pool lovers in Oakey can soon dive into a new and improved aquatic centre with a new kiosk and change rooms to be completed just in time for summer.

The Toowoomba Regional Council will start work on the new facilities by the middle of this year.

The project will include new family change rooms and new facilities to improve access for people with disabilities.

Councillor James O’Shea said the project would breathe new life into the much-loved aquatic centre.

“The existing kiosk and change rooms have served the community very well over the years but corrosion and general wear and tear have impacted these buildings and they are now in need of an update,” Mr O’Shea said.

“The current kiosk and change rooms will be demolished to make way for new and improved facilities including family changing rooms and better access to the aquatic centre for people with a disability.”

Mr O’Shea said most of the works would be completed during winter months while the centre was closed.

“The pool will reopen in September but with some outstanding works to demolish the old buildings still needed to be completed which may cause some minor disruption to the community,” he said.

“Oakey Aquatic Centre is a great community based facility and once these improvement works are complete, it will be an even better facility to be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.”
