‘No alternate supply’: Goondiwindi advances water security efforts

Vulnerable towns east of Toowoomba have fast tracked their water security efforts as supply levels dwindle in the region.

'Critical water shortages' still plague parts of NSW

As the prospects of a dwindling water supply become more of a reality, the Goondiwindi Regional Council has made monumental steps forward to secure water for the region.

In a letter from the mayor’s desk, mayor Lawrence Springborg said the council was working hard and fast to advance water security measures in the region.

“Council approved the drilling of up to three test bore sites in Inglewood,” he said.

“The three sites will be up to 350m in depth and have been selected based on over 100 initial test points in the area.

“Whilst there is no guarantee of viability of the sites, Council remains committed to looking for alternate water sources for Inglewood, which is the last town without water security.”

Cr Springborg said Inglewood’s water supply was “vulnerable” at the moment, but the construction of new bores would improve the situation.

The council has also successfully commenced trails for one of two new bored in Goondiwindi, which will blend a small percentage of water from the Gubbermunda aquifer into the normal river supply.

“The lightly blended supply is treated to exceed Australian water quality standards, and residents should expect no difference in taste, smell or appearance,” the mayor said.

“These bores have been a significant investment into the future of the region and I congratulate all stakeholders from previous and current Councillors, staff and State agencies for their contribution to this outcome.”

Water restrictions remain in Goondiwindi, Yelarbon, and Texas.
