A national movement where politically independent community members come together to take on sitting MPs looks set to launch in Toowoomba.

A Twitter account called Voices of Groom was created in November and has become more active this month, just weeks after the Groom by-election, which was won by the LNP’s Garth Hamilton.

The account describes itself as “a group promoting independent political representation for the Federal seat of Groom”.

It also lists five key objects: “Representation, authenticity, innovation, sustainability (and) enterprising”.

Voices of … has been a grassroots political movement that has cropped up around Australia in recent years.

At the 2019 Federal Election a group called Voices of Warringah backed Zali Steggall in the race for former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s seat.

Ms Steggall won.

A similar grassroots independent campaign movement has been used successfully in the seat of Indi.

It’s currently unknown who is behind the Twitter account.

They were contacted for comment.
