Self-proclaimed anti-vaxxer and murderer Nathaniel Train broke into Queensland illegally carrying loaded weapons and camouflage gear it can be revealed.

A Goondiwindi region farmer who chose to remain anonymous , told the ABC he had watched a man in a black Toyota Landcruiser try to ram the border gates on the Boongangar Bridge across the Macintyre River near Talwood in December 2021.

After failing to break through, the man who would later be identified as Train, used an angle grinder to cut the locks on the gate and cross illegally into Queensland.

Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor Lawrence Springborg AM told The Chronicle there were numerous border breaches while Covid restrictions were in place.

“We’ve had gates rammed, locks cut, and we would supply the information to police,” he said.

Cr Springborg said while at times designated cameras at the borders would capture details about the vehicles, including the make, model and registration, council were not aware of the people within the vehicle or what they had with them.

He was unaware one of the border breaches was Train, however all known illegal crossings were reported to police.

“We have no idea,” he said.

“Nothing surprises me anymore.”

At the time of Train’s crossing into Queensland, just months after his resignation from Walgett Community School, the district was in major flood, and Train’s 4WD became bogged.

A Queensland farmer told the ABC he had helped save Train from the flooded road, after which Train began dumping items into floodwaters.

“Old mate [Train] hit the first lot of water and touched the brakes and got through but then he hit the next section at about 60km/hr and basically drowned the engine of the car,” the farmer said.

“He jumped out of the car and started ditching all the stuff out of the car and throwing it into the creek. I thought, ‘that looks sketchy’.’”

A Talwood resident told The Chronicle it was almost common knowledge that a man, who they would later understand was Train, had gotten himself bogged on his way to Talwood and began dumping loaded guns into the floodwaters.

As the waters began to recede, residents across the area found multiple short-range, loaded weapons in the creek beds.

“It’s not something you hear every day,” the Talwood resident, who chose to remain unnamed, said.

“He never came back to get them. I guess because he would get sent to jail.”

The Queensland farmer told the ABC after saving Train from the floodwaters, Train had spoken in code to someone on the phone.

Train reportedly got guns, hunting equipment and some large “Rambo” knives out of his car, before he was picked up by someone a few kilometres up the road towards Talwood.

Train’s 4WD remained at the farmer’s property, which held documents confirming Train’s identity and his previous employment history at a New South Wales school.

The farmer reported the weapons, vehicle and border breach to police, fearing the equipment may be stolen property.

At the time, police confiscated the weapons, and told the farmer to do what he wished with the rest of the stuff in the vehicle, which was later disposed of.

The vehicle reportedly has remained at the property, however Train’s former wife in NSW was now requesting its return.

The Ethical Standards Command is reportedly conducting a major investigation into the incident.

“This is a complex and thorough coronial investigation overviewed by the Crime and Corruption Commission and will be reported to the state coroner,’’ a Queensland Police Service spokesperson told the ABC.

“Family liaison officers have been appointed and are working closely with the families involved in this tragedy.”

Train, along with his brother Gareth and former wife Stacey, shot and killed two police officers and a concerned neighbour during an ambush on their Wieambilla property around 4.30pm on Monday, December 12.

The Train trio were shot and killed by police later that night.
