THE Toowoomba Showgrounds came alive with the thunder of hoofs and the crack of .303 rifles on Saturday as the Queensland Mounted Infantry Challenge rolled into town.

The challenge tested horsemanship skills, as well as other military skills like tent-pegging, dismounting for action, and more.

Today, Light Horse Troops are historical re-enactment units and their members are all volunteers.

11th Light Horse Regiment Darling Downs Troop president John Egan said he had six great uncles who served in the Light Horse in wars from the Boer War to World War II.

"So I guess I'm following the tradition from the family point of view," he said.
